The Merola Opera Program under the artistic leadership of the San Francisco Opera Center announces 2024 opportunities for singers, pianists, and directors. Sullivan Award winners receive $10,000 prizes and are eligible for grants to learn new roles, a unique aspect of the Foundation’s commitment to early career artists. More than 1,000 singers have earned Sullivan funding since 1957. Winners call the support “life-changing.” 2023 auditions will be held in New York on October 29 and 30. The company provides many performing opportunities throughout its fall and winter seasons. The training aspect of the program focuses on encouraging singers to give impassioned performances through vocal expression with an understanding of the meaning of the text, the poetry, and the music. In private coachings and classes, acting is approached through an efficiency of movement that brings out the meaning of the work rather than obscuring it. The VOCAL IMMERSION PROGRAM at CASTLETON (ViP) is a 2-week performing arts mentoring program for a select group of emerging professional artists. Opera Theatre of St. Louis' Gerdine Young Artist Program, led by Patricia Racette, seeks to offer emerging young artists invaluable performance experience as they begin their professional careers. In addition to singing in the mainstage production choruses, GYAs are featured in supporting roles, cover all mainstage roles, and are featured soloists in the annual Center Stage program accompanied by the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, an event that draws opera administrators, artist managers, and national and international press to St. Louis each season. GYAs are hired on an AGMA contract and receive a weekly salary, round-trip transportation, a modest sustenance allotment and accommodations for the duration of their engagement.
