For the centennial of Puccini's death, this season we are casting roles in Gianni Schicchi as well as in scenes from Suor Angelica, Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, La bohème, and other bel canto, baroque, and dramatic repertoire. We specialize in teaching Italian opera and art song through a focus on the poetic language. A singing competition unlike any other, in which acting counts as much as vocal talent. The Lotte Lenya Competition welcomes talented singer/actors to show they can "do it all" by presenting four contrasting theatrical songs and arias. More than $120,000 will be distributed in prizes throughout the 2024 Competition, including the top prize of $25,000. Additionally, individual prizes will be awarded after each of the preliminary ($750), semifinal ($1250), and final rounds (between $3,000 and $25,000). Application/video audition deadline: 24 January 2024. No fee to apply; travel stipends provided for in-person semifinal and final rounds. Open to singer/actors of all nationalities, ages 19–32. The Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hennings-Fischer Foundation are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 23rd annual Young Artist Competition. This prestigious competition is open to all instrumentalists (except piano) and all vocalists age 30 or under as of February 24, 2024. Grand prize winners will appear with the Burbank Philharmonic in a regular season concert and receive a cash prize of $1,000 at the time of performance. Recent past winners and finalists include sopranos Angela Meade and Julie Adams and violinists Nigel Armstrong and Aubree Oliverson.

Canto Vocal Programs is now receiving applications for Summer 2024! Canto is returning to northern Virginia for a four week program preparing and performing a fully staged production of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro in Italian with a youth orchestra. The show will be double cast, performances on August 3 and 4. Joining Canto's guest faculty this year will be Ken Weiss from Washington National Opera, and WNO Cafritz young artist program. We are thrilled to welcome reknowned mezzo Jamie Barton, who will offer two masterclasses concluding with a Q&A. Music, dramatic and language coachings, masterclasses,diction and acting classes will be offered through out the program. Special classes will be offered addressing how to achieve peak performance.
