The Houston Saengerbund is a private, charitable foundation in Houston, Texas whose mission is to support and encourage German music, language, and culture within the Houston community and in the greater German community in the U.S. Each year the foundation sponsors a vocal competition for rising professional singers who are on the brink of a solo career. From over one hundred applicants, six finalists are brought to Houston to compete in a Finals Concert where they perform three selections from the German vocal repertoire.
Past judges have come from the ranks of professional opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera and the Houston Grand Opera, major US Music Conservatories, and professional artists from the world of classical singing. Past winners have gone on to significant opportunities with the Chicago Lyric Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and Santa Fe Opera.
