HANDORF COMPANY ARTIST PROGRAM
Opera Memphis is auditioning all voice types for 2020-2021 season.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Handorf Company Artist Program provides career building experience to emerging singers through robust performance opportunities and personalized goals. Beyond the pursuit of artistic excellence, it seeks to provide the tools and entrepreneurial mindset necessary for citizen-artists to champion opera in the 21st Century.
The ideal candidates for the program have completed their graduate studies and are ready for meaningful performance opportunities in a wide variety of styles. In addition, they are comfortable speaking with and in front of audiences of diverse backgrounds to talk about opera and its civic value. Handorf Company Artists will work extensively as a part of Opera Memphis outreach and advocacy (though not as a part of school or educational tours.)
A typical year will begin with “30 Days of Opera,” OM’s award-winning program that brings a month of free performances to every corner of the city. Serving as both guerilla marketing and civic practice, this program serves as the public face of Opera Memphis for most Memphians. Handorf Company Artists will be the core performers of this program, singing everything from individual arias to fully staged short operas.
In addition, Handorf Company Artists will perform comprimario, supporting, and sometimes principal roles in both the Masterworks Opera series and the Midtown Opera Festival, our annual festival of chamber works.
Rounding out the season are a number of recital and cabaret performances in a variety of venues. Each Handorf Company Artist will be the principal artist in at least one of these performances.
When not in rehearsal or production, company artists will coach with Music Director Michael Sakir and General Director Ned Canty, as well as visiting artists and coaches. These additional coaching sessions are based on the needs of the individual artist, and might include topics like tax preparation, social media brand-building, or a guided shopping excursion for audition wardrobe.
Handorf Company Artists are in residence in Memphis from late-August through late-April. During that time, they are employees of Opera Memphis, and they receive housing, medical insurance, and a semi-monthly stipend, as well as a travel stipend to cover a portion of audition trips and lessons.
