SINGERS: For the audition, prepare three contrasting arias from the standard repertoire. One must be in Italian and one in English. The third aria may be in Italian, English, French, or Italian.
Young Artists will be considered for the following MAINSTAGE roles: In Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) performed in Italian: Gianetta (Soprano or High Mezzo-Soprano) and Belcore (Baritone). In Rogers and Hammerstein's The King and I: Tuptim (Soprano or Mezzo-Soprano), Lun Tha (Tenor), Lady Thiang (Soprano or Mezzo-Soprano), and Prince Chulalongkorn (Tenor), plus additional cameo and speaking roles. Young Artists will also cover Principal Roles.
Young Artists will perform both Mozart's The Impressario (Der Schauspieldirektor) and excerpts from Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen, both sung in English and performed with Chamber Ensemble.
PIANISTS: For the audition, prepare an approximately five-minute excerpt from an ensemble section of L'elisir d'amore. It is helpful if you can sing some of the vocal parts to give us an indication of your language skills and your understanding of vocal writing. Pianists who are comfortable sight reading may be asked to play an aria for one of the singers whose audition time is near their own.
Please note that due to the large volume of applicants, submission of an application does not guarantee a live audition. Live auditions will be at the discretion of the Artistic Director and will be scheduled in the order in which applications arrive.
Opera North is not liable if auditions cannot be held due to severe weather, fire, riot, act of God, or for any other cause of the same general class that could not be reasonably anticipated or prevented. Although the Company shall make reasonable efforts to re-schedule any canceled auditions, it cannot guarantee all candidates will receive new audition times.
