Opera Saratoga - 2022 Summer Young Artist Program for Singers

Due to the uncertainties surrounding the recent rise in cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant, and out of an abundance of caution, all second round auditions will be by video once again this season in lieu of live auditions.

Opera Saratoga is once again working together with a consortium of other young artist programs, led by Houston Grand Opera, on a coordinated virtual audition process. Steps are outlined below to guide your understanding of this shared video audition process, and what is unique to Opera Saratoga:

Step 1: Apply to each program as you normally would. Applications are due Sunday, September 20 (deadline extended).

Step 2: You will be notified if you have received a second round video audition by each company by Friday, October 8. This notification will contain a link to submit a new aria list.

Step 3: Submit your aria list (the same list should be submitted for all programs), indicating your chosen “starter” aria, by Tuesday, October 12. For your video audition, Opera Saratoga will ask you to submit a list of five selections, including at least one 21^st century aria in English, and one musical theater selection.

Step 4: You will be notified of the arias that have been requested from your list on Wednesday, October 20.

PLEASE NOTE that while the consortium of companies will consolidate their request so that each artist can submit the same video to each company, if you are being considered for a specific role, Opera Saratoga may request a supplemental video recording of one additional selection from your submitted list, which you will have the opportunity to upload separately.

Step 5: Record your new video audition and submit the video to each company via YAP Tracker by Friday, November 5. If Opera Saratoga has requested a supplemental selection, please make sure you upload that aria separately.

THERE IS NO FEE TO APPLY TO THE YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM AT OPERA SARATOGA

Audio - Opera Aria Recordings (REQUIRED)

Audio Selections: Singers must submit two contrasting opera arias/excerpts recorded within the past 12 months. Selections may be with piano or orchestra, but may not be a cappella. Recordings must be of operatic repertoire, not song literature or oratorio. One selection must be in English. As Opera Saratoga regularly produces 21st century works, we encourage singers to submit one aria that demonstrates their facility with contemporary musical idioms, if available.*

Audio - Musical Theater (OPTIONAL)

If you have a musical theater song recorded in the past 12 months, you may submit this for consideration in addition to your two operatic arias. Please note that a musical theater selection may not be submitted in place of the operatic selections required above.

PLEASE ANSWER IF YOU ARE OVER 30 YEARS OLD: The Young Artist Program at Opera Saratoga does not have an age limit, as we recognize that people may follow various paths to an operatic career. However, as a young artist development program, most participating artists are in their twenties. If you are over 30, please explain below why you feel that spending the summer with Opera Saratoga is an appropriate next step for you.
