Opera NUOVA - 2016 Young Artist Program: Singers and Pianists

This application closed on Sunday November 1, 2015.

A complete application package for Singers will include:

A fully completed application form. (Submitted through YAP TRACKER)
A web resolution headshot with a maximum filesize of 2 MB
A current one page résumé or CV. (Please be sure to list any and all union affiliations.)
A bio for promotional purposes (100 words)

TWO references are required for applicants who are attending for the first time, or
who have attended previously but not in 2015 (ie: this past summer).

For 2015 participants, only one reference is required.

One reference should come from the applicant’s main instructor. A second may be provided by a voice coach, conductor, opera stage director, general director or other artistic administrator.

The application fee is $55.00 for the Ten Day Intensive and $65 for the Collaborative Pianists and Six Week Intensives.

This fee is non-refundable and an audition time will not be secured until payment is received.

Applicants who are unable to attend a live audition may submit a DVD.

Please note: Singers must provide their own accompanist.

TEN-DAY PROGRAM AUDITIONS

One aria
One art song
(any language or style is acceptable)

Ten-Day program auditionees are allotted a 10 minute time slot.

6-WEEK INTENSIVE OPERATIC AUDITIONS

Singers must prepare the following:

Two Italian arias
(Please provide contrasting styles and tempi. No Oratorio please.)
One aria of your choice
One English aria, or a music theatre selection
(One of your arias can be replaced with an art song of your choice)
One poem, sonnet or monologue (classic or contemporary) no longer than 2 minutes

6-WEEK INTENSIVE MUSIC THEATRE AUDITIONS

One song from each of the following eras:

Tin Pan Alley era (1920 – 1949)
(Composers such as Berlin, Kern, Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Weill,
etc.)
The Golden Age (1943-1974)
(Composers such as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Bock and
Harnick, Sondheim (early) etc.)
Contemporary Musical Theatre repertoire (1974 – present day)
(Composers such as Sondheim (later), Kander and Ebb, Schwartz, Finn, etc.)
A Jason Robert Brown music theatre selection
A two minute monologue (2 mins) (Classical or contemporary)

Six-Week Intensive auditionees are allotted a 15 minute time slot.

PIANIST AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

WITH a singer:
Two selections to be performed in a collaborative performance:

1 opera aria
1 art song

WITHOUT a singer:

1 sight reading example (provided at the audition)
1 prepared excerpt:
EITHER

The Act III quartet from Puccini’s La Bohème
(Begin at “Andante Con Moto” on page 222 of the Schirmer Edition. Play until the end of the Act.)
OR
Or the Finale I from Rossini’s Barber of Seville
(Begin on pg 125 in the Schirmer edition. Finish when the chorus enters.)

NOTE: The pianist should attempt to play the excerpt and sing or speak the cue lines.

All applicants will receive written feedback from their audition within one month of the audition date.
