Butler Opera International Voice Competition brings together The Sarah and Ernest Butler Opera Center at the University of Texas, the Central Texas Philharmonic and Austin Opera to award over $30,000 in prize money. Awards are earned through a May 26, 2023 concert with the Central Texas Philharmonic at Bates Recital Hall on the campus of UT Austin. An international panel of judges will select the winners. Every finalist will receive an honorarium.
The top cash prizes in 2023 are $10,000 1st prize, $6,000 2nd prize, $4,000 3rd prize, and $2,500 for superlative vocal artistry in honor of soprano Kerry French McKechnie.
The finalists will travel to the University of Texas in Austin, where they will be presented in concert with Central Texas Philharmonic from which the final judges' decision will be announced.
The deadline for singers to apply is February 1, 2023. For the competition, finalists must be available for rehearsal in Austin by 10a, May 23rd. May 23-26 finalists will prepare for the grand concert held on May 26, 2023 where prizes will be earned.
The prizes include international recognition, a professional-grade HD audio/video recording with orchestra, a booking with the Central Texas Philharmonic as well as over $30,000 in cash awards.
