In light of the pandemic and in order to support artists, Annapolis Opera will waive the application fee for this year’s Competition.
IMPORTANT DATES
February 12, 2021: Application closes.
February 22, 2021: Semi-Finalists notified.
March 12, 2021: Semi-Finalist video recordings due.
March 22, 2021: Finalists notified.
April 5, 2021: Finalist video recordings due.
April 11, 2021 at 3 PM: Finals.
PRIZES
Prizes totaling more than $10,000 will be awarded. Each Finalist will receive prize money.
ELIGIBILITY
The Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition is open to all singers aged 20-35 (as of the Finals on April 11, 2021), who are permanent residents of the United States, and are not currently, previously, or anticipated to be under professional management during the competition period. Previous First Prize winners of the Vocal Competition are ineligible to compete.
REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary Round: The Preliminary round will be a ‘blind’ review, in which Applicants will be identified only by application number and voice type. This round is by submission of 3 arias (MP3/4 audio files only), with piano accompaniment only. Arias should represent a variety of languages and styles, and should include at least one selection in English. Arias should be sung in their original key and their original language. Each aria must be unedited, without recording enhancements, and should be recorded in one "take.”
Semi-Final Round: Applicants will submit the same 3 arias as in the Preliminary round, again with piano accompaniment only, but this time in video format [MP4/MOV video files only]. Each aria must be unedited, without recording enhancements, and should be recorded in one "take.” Dress for the Semi-Final round is audition attire.
Final Round: Applicants will submit a list of 5 arias, from which judges will select 2 arias to be submitted in video format [MP4/MOV video files only]. Repertoire for this round need not be the same as for the Preliminary and Semi-Final rounds. Arias should represent a variety of languages and styles, and should include at least one selection in English. Arias should be sung in their original key and their original language. The official Pianist for the Competition will provide the piano accompaniment for these videos. Each aria must be unedited, without recording enhancements, and should be recorded in one "take." The Finals round will be a public event, held virtually. Finalists must be available to appear virtually for the Finals event at 3 PM EST on Sunday, April 11, 2021. Dress for the Final round is audition attire.
